An Update
Hi all,
As you might know we were involved in a road traffic accident on August 13th when a woman drove into our car, after suddenly moving into our side of the road. My husband was badly injured.
A small update on where he is now:
- My husband broke his right leg at the ankle, shattered his femur, hip and pelvis. Part of his femur migrated into his pelvis.
- 3 surgeries followed to repair and stabilize all via plates and screws
- 3 weeks of heavy morphine use
- 110 stitches were removedĀ after all the surgical wounds healed
- 8 days intensive care due to complications as pneumonia and a bowel obstruction, of which kept in a come for two days
- transfer to rehabilitation center after 5 weeks of hospital
- After 3 days in rehab back to hospital with a thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
- Now he is back in rehab and so far doing well, he is able to walk a bit with crotches without putting any weight on the bad leg, that has to improve over time. He lost 3 stone but his beautiful blue eyes are sparkling, as ever. He is keeping up the spirits well at the moment, and there has been a discharge date set, 4 October we hope to take him finally home after nearly 8 weeks in 4 different hospitals. When he is finally home there will be another period of recovery and gaining strenght again, but at least that will be in his own, comfortable, environment. All in all it will take at least 1 year to fully recover and maybe another corrective surgery. But we are both totally fed up with hospitals for now.
I am doing pretty well apart from having an ugly deformed breast now due to seatbelt impact, and my ribs still slightly hurt. Our house looks a mess, and I haven’t touched my camera since August 13th, and don’t feel like it either. I have started writing a book about all that happened, but most of all about the incompetency of the Irish health care system. Staff has been brilliant, but limited, due to bad bad resources. I mean, how can an orthopaedic ward NOT have wheelchairs available for their patients? Or monkey-bars? Or a leg rest? As frustrating for the staff as for the patients. I am writing about that
I will not be back here in full for now yet, this was just a one time update. with a golden oldie (photo-wise)
Until I will pick up photography again and update this blog on a daily basis again, I only want to say Hi and THANKS to all the lovely people who have been so supportive during the past 6 weeks. You know who you are, and I love all of you!
